The real power of your personal brand
What do Bill Gates, Tim Cook and Elon Musk have in common, besides having a career/ business in the tech world and billions of dollars of net worth?
I know this may seem like an extremely vague question on face value, but once you understand the impact of this thought process, your perspective towards the world of business and (hint 👉🏻) personal brands will change forever.
All the three stalwarts mentioned earlier are personal brands in their own right, and I know that’s no breaking news.
However, would you believe me that the social media following of these business celebrities is far higher than the brands that made them the celebrities that they are?
Don’t believe me?
Numbers don’t lie. As I type this on the social media platform Twitter/X…
Elon Musk has 210.6M followers, while Tesla has 23.3M followers
Bill Gates has 66.1M followers, while Microsoft has 13.9M followers
Tim Cook has 14.6 followers, while Apple has 9.7M followers.
Are you tracking what’s happening here?
By the way, the situation isn’t widely different for Indian business stalwarts.
Anand Mahindra has 11.4M followers, while Mahindra Group has 1.3M followers on the platform.
My simple question for you is… Do you think these CXOs/ founders have excess time in their schedules to focus on building such a large following on social media?
I agree a lot (if not all) of their content might be posted on their behalf by a PR team, but do you sense the depth of that statement?
Why would a business celebrity (for lack of a better terminology) invest in a PR team to keep posting tweets on the platform if they (and their companies) were not benefiting from the exercise?
The world as we know it has changed for good.
People trust brands, but they trust humans a lot more.
People want to buy the best of the products, but one of the most significant reasons that influence their purchase decisions is their parasocial relationships that they have formed with the personal brands backing these businesses.
Now, the sooner the penny drops for you, the better for your business.
The sooner you wake up and smell the coffee (read: start building your personal brand) the better for the balance sheet of your business.
