Content Creation Growth Is About Setting The Right Benchmarks
Want to achieve success as a content creator? How are you setting your benchmarks/ targets?
This is the consecutive post #119 from my daily blog + newsletter series.
If you’ve been following this series and are finding value from this blog/ newsletter, please consider spreading the word.
Introduction
Being a management student and a business owner has gifted me with clarity on one important fact of growth.
You can only succeed if you’re measuring every move and can trace back the impact of every significant move over an extended time period.
In fact, if you’d like to read a book to understand more about this concept, I’d like to recommend Measure What Matters by John Doerr.
In today’s post, let’s talk about content creation.
If you’re a budding/ aspiring content creator, make sure you set your focus only on the following 5 benchmarks until you cross 100k subscribers/ followers irrespective of the platform.
1 - Organic interaction
The most effective way to grow on social media and to build your personal brand is creating content that resonates with your target audience.
Focus on creating content that connects with your target audience in the first click and get them hooked.
The benchmark to set for organic interaction of your content is 10% of total views per post.
2 - Newsletter Subscribers
Growing your personal brand only on social media platforms is like building a skyscraper on a piece of land that you rent out from someone.
For long-term sustainable growth, it’s essential that you build your newsletter list.
The benchmark to set for email newsletter subscriber growth is 0.5% of total views per month, per platform.
3 - Getting DMs from the right people.
Your content has to evoke emotions of 10% of your audience, but it must also resonate so strongly with some people that they can’t resist but to reach out and wish to connect with you on DM.
The benchmark to set for (meaningful) DM with opportunities, appreciation and feedback is 1% of total views per post.
This benchmark also holds true for creators and business owners who request their audience to connect on DM for consulting services/ registration of some masterclass/ webinar.
If you’re in the fashion/ lifestyle/entertainment niche, the DM ratio can be lower than 1% because creators in this category often tend to get inappropriate messages from trolls and faceless accounts (sidebar: if you know, you know).
4 - Follower/ subscriber growth
Good content definitely converts into a spike in the number of followers/ subscribers.
The benchmark to set for follower/ subscriber growth is 10% of total views per post. When your post goes viral, the right benchmark to set for those posts is 1% of the total views of that post.
5 - External Opportunities
Once you cross 1000 subscribers/ followers you must start getting people reaching out to you on DMs with offers from across the spectrum of User Generated Content (UGC) requests, brand collaborations, an occasional shout-out from significant people in your domain/ celebrities, etc.
The benchmark to set for external opportunities is 0.1% of total views per month
Conclusion
Has this post given you something to think about?
Did you learn something new?
When you approach this post with the right perspective, you will realise that these numbers are a lot easier to achieve vs. the (incorrect) benchmarks that you were probably holding for yourself in your subconscious mind.
