Introduction
Starting a business is easy. Running and managing a business is tough, but the toughest task/ aspect of any business is to grow the business consistently.
While there are a few non-negotiables of any business to exist/ sustain like having a product that the audience/ market loves, dealing with the customers ethically at all times, managing the team/ business finances like a pro, etc.
But there is one absolutely fundamental rule that was true a century ago, holds true till date and will remain true for existence and growth of any (and every) business on the planet.
So, let’s talk about….
The only important secret of business growth
If someone was to ask me to bet my money on a business and if I were allowed to look at only one aspect of a business, to place my bets, I’d ask for only one metric.
The most important metric of any business is sales growth.
If the sales volumes of the business have been growing consistently at a healthy pace (20% or more), that’s one business I’d bet on.
Let’s understand the absolute fundamental logic behind this.
If the business is delivering quality products/ service to the market, their sales are bound to grow.
If the team of the company is happy, they will be happy to work at the workplace. A happy workplace is a growing workplace, and for a company/ brand/ business to sustain the cost of a growing (and happy) workplace, they will have to ensure that the sales numbers are healthy and growing.
If the business services existing customers well, a healthy percentage of those healthy customers will be happy to give repeat business/ buy the upsell or the more premium offerings of the business which would have a direct effect on sales growth.
Conclusion
Look at this from any perspective/ angle, if you’re serious about starting and building a business that will stand the test of time, you will have to continue to focus on:
- creating a product that serves the pain points of your target customers better than most of the competitors of your industry,
- you’re focusing on marketing your brand/ business to ensure that the sales pipeline of your business is always healthy and most importantly,
- that the sales numbers of your business are growing month on month and year on year.
