Feeling Helpless in The Race of Business/ Career? Challenge This Norm Now
Waiting until you’re ready is the worst way to deal in life. Time to change your approach
The Warmup
We are all leading a very…. For lack of a better word, volatile lives.
There’s always something to play catch up with, there’s always some more goals to achieve and also, there’s always someone else who’s running faster, training harder and who’s most likely to take us over.
Not to forget, with every day when we are not playing our a-game, we also feel like time is slipping away, self-doubt starts to creep in and a lot more energy is expended in trying to gather the energy to keep moving, than to actually make a significant difference in life.
If you resonate with these sentiments, this post is going to suggest a solution that’s almost so easy to adapt, that you’d want to make it your second nature on an almost immediate basis.
The Start
The only reason why you’re probably feeling restless/ underconfident is because:
1. You’re comparing yourself to others
This makes you feel not good enough
2. You’re setting really high benchmarks for yourself
Knowingly/ unknowingly you’re adding too much weight or pressure on your shoulders which becomes a burden to carry after one point.
3. You don’t feel ready yet
With so many people to compete with, and high benchmarks, even if you give your 100%, your efforts seem to be deriving minimal to no results, as per your standard.
However, if these situations are not dealt with (on an ASAP basis), you can’t be sure regarding when they will backfire and cause damage that may end up being too devastating to reconcile.
Let’s talk about how to best deal with this situation, in the most realistic, effective and practical way.
The Race
If you’re serious about crossing a long distance over time, it's best if you change your strategy.
The three steps I’d suggest for you in ascending order of impact are:
1. Get a third person’s perspective
More often than not, we fail to understand and appreciate the impact of our efforts.
However, at times like these, getting someone trustworthy to look at your performance and give you a perspective may shock you, in a pleasant manner.
Sometimes we are so close to the task/ project/ challenge at hand that we lose perspective, and we end up over analysing and under appreciating our efforts/ results delivered.
An unbiased third person’s perspective could be a game changer every once in a while.
The purpose of this exercise is not to get validation, but to get a fair assessment of our status quo (and maybe get some clarity regarding the path ahead).
2. Connect with a mentor/ coach
This is the most effective way to stay on track for the long term.
Investing in a mentor/ coach allows you to focus only on the task at hand, because your coach/ mentor is the compass that leads you to your goal.
Follow their instructions/ directions and you know you’re going to achieve your goals. It’s not a matter of if, just a matter of when and in the bigger scheme of things, even when is primarily in your control, since you’re the one who’s driving the growth engine (on instructions/ assistance from the mentor).
3. Just start and keep the momentum.
This is the most underrated secret from the book of the mavericks.
It’s not about the distance and pace that you’re covering, as much as being dedicated to the direction and being consistent with your effort.
There’s nobody more dangerous than an opponent who doesn’t stop until they cross the finishing line.
Make sure in every aspect of your life, you're this person and see how you keep crossing milestones and leave your peers/ competitors behind in an organic and effortless manner.
The Finishing Line
When you manage to execute the journey of achieving your goals as prescribed/ suggested in this post, you’d realise that life is all about crossing one milestone after the next.
When you start enjoying this process, even crossing the most desired finishing line will feel similar to achieving the past milestones, because that’s when you truly start enjoying the journey.
And, in the bigger scheme of things, enjoying the journey is what makes all the difference in the mindset and the life of the person who is on the journey.
Make sure you stay kind to yourself, seek help when needed and keep moving.
This is the roadmap to succeed in any (read: all aspects of life)
