A Fool Proof Way To Learn How To Be Emotionally Resilient and Live a Happier Life
A Fool Proof Way To Learn How To Be Emotionally Resilient and Live a Happier Life
Introduction
A small fun fact about me: I love watching/ listening to podcasts.
1-hour long episode, easy.
2 hours long episode, no problem.
3 hours long episode? Bring it on.
I’ve easily consumed 1000+ episodes.
And in multiple episodes, I’ve observed one question gets repeated/ asked in multiple variations.
More often than not, most guests also confirm on camera and say, that this is the most difficult question.
The question (which gets asked in multiple ways) is, “are you happy?” or “are you truly happy?”
Imagine you’re a guest in one of the podcasts and the host(ess) asks you this question.
What will your answer be?
Let’s try to answer this question or at least find a way to reach a place wherein we know what happiness looks like and create a roadmap to achieve said happiness.
What is happiness?
Now, just an attempt to answer this question or suggest an answer (as the only right answer) would be foolish.
So, I found the next best option/ solution to the situation.
I told an AI bot to explain to me, “What is happiness?”
To get an answer which has depth in it, I decided to give it a prompt that was thoughtful.
The prompt I used was, “Give me a simple yet profound explanation of the word happy”
I was pleasantly surprised with the answer.
The answer I received was as follows
“A state of being where your heart is at peace, your mind is content, and your soul is joyful.
It's not just about feeling good or having fun, but also about being fulfilled, grateful, and present in the moment.”
Asking me, I genuinely think it is a really good answer for sure.
Now, let’s try to achieve this state of being where our heart is at peace, mind is content, and soul is (feeling) joyful.
Is happiness 24*7*365 possible?
Do you think it's possible to be in a state of being where our heart is at peace, mind is content, and soul is (feeling) joyful all the time?
I don’t think so.
However, even if we are in that zone for most part of our being, I think you’d agree that would be an extremely fulfilling life worth living, right?
So now, this is how I prescribe we achieve this state of zen.
My analytical mind tells me that the only way to feel happy for most part of your existence is to live a life where everything is your responsibility and to accept (and believe) that you’re in control of everything that’s happening in your life.
This explanation may sound too perfunctory, but every situation in life can be divided in input - process and output.
You need to realise that happiness is an output and input, and process are entirely in our control.
Even if it’s not in your control, you hold the power with regards to our behaviour towards how you feel about the input and/ or process of someone else, if the output has a direct impact on your life.
For example, if tomorrow the government decides to trouble the total tax, that is a situation/ input that’s not in your control, however you can learn to process it in a manner that the output leads to the least damage (if any), to your state of happiness.
If your input is in place, for example, placing an order on the food delivery app, and the process is flawed (at the restaurant’s/ application’s end), I need to learn how to deal with the flaw in the process because at the end, my happiness is at stake.
If you take the responsibility/ learn how to analyse every situation, so that the outcome leads to your happiness every time, can you imagine how powerful that would make you on an emotional level?
There is no outcome/ benefit of complaining, so you need to (learn how to) stop complaining and get back to work and find a solution.
If the tax is being doubled, it’s not going to affect just you, the impact of the same will be experienced in the entire economy and hence the situation will find its balance in a couple of years.
If the restaurant messes with your order, you stop ordering from that restaurant in the future.
If the app messes up your food order, you use the alternative app the next time.
Or just understand that it's a bad day, come to terms with it, and move on.
The more you practice this; the sooner you will achieve the space/ mindset of being zen almost all the time.
Long term impact of having a positive mindset/ positive attitude
Practicing the theory of absorbing responsibility and accepting that you’re in control of your emotions/ eventual outcome is a journey.
It’s impossible to master this skill in a day/ week and the impact at the start may be full of irritation and (maybe) anger.
However, once this thought process ends up becoming your second nature, you will realise the less you absorb and the more you learn to let go (of situations that are not your mistake/ not in your control), the easier your life will be.
Continuous practice of this will have a direct impact on your mindset and over time you will live a much happier life, and your overall mindset will be positive more often than not.
Your Thoughts!
Do you agree with this chain of thought?
Do you agree that if you take responsibility for the input and/ or the process you can ensure your happiness in most situations?
Is there any aspect that you’d process/ explain differently?
Is there anything that you disagree with?
