Marketing's Dirty Little Secret: It's Not About Selling
Great marketing creates curiosity, not cash
This is the 254th consecutive post on MrEmogical Notes. If you’ve been following this series and are finding value from this blog/ newsletter, please consider sharing this post with one person who you feel needs to read this for their betterment.
Introduction
One of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking:
"The purpose of marketing is to generate more sales."
Let me break this bubble for you. That couldn’t be further from the truth.
Marketing ≠ Sales
If marketing was meant to directly generate sales, then…
What would the sales team do?
Marketing and sales are two complementary but separate functions.
Marketing brings people in
Sales help convert them.
Tech & Growth teams optimize the path in between
The Real Role of Marketing
The true job of marketing is to build awareness.
Here’s what that looks like:
01 - Making people aware of the problem
02 - Making them aware of a possible solution
03 - Introducing them to your product or service
04 - Building trust around your brand identity
05 - Getting them to show up (to your store, site, webinar, or masterclass)
Let Sales Do Its Job
Once the person has entered the door, whether physical or digital... That’s where sales begin.
And it’s not marketing’s job to convert.
It’s everyone else’s—sales, product, tech, growth—to move that person from interest to purchase.
So, Stop Forcing It
If your marketing isn't driving instant sales, that’s not a failure.
That’s how it’s supposed to work.
