Outwork Everyone: How Your Work Ethic Will Make You Unbeatable
Your Work Ethic Is Your Absolute Best Edge In Your Business/ Career

Story time
Imagine someone from your family is hospitalized and needs surgery.
You have gotten your family member admitted to one of the best hospitals in the city.
It was an emergency admission and you’ve managed to opt for one of the senior most surgeons from the panel of doctors available at the hospital for the surgery.
The surgery is scheduled in the next 2 hours and you are speaking to family and friends on phone calls, and telling them how the situation got absolutely serious suddenly and how you just had to select the doctor on the basis of your gut-feeling.
You feel extremely grateful because everyone you speak to has only good things to say about the doctor.
The doctor arrives on the floor where the operation is scheduled 30 minutes before the operation and requests to speak to the patient’s family.
You and 2 of your family members enter the doctor’s cabin. He offers all of you to sit and say these words…
“Hello *insert your last name here* family. I’m Dr. XYZ and I’ve been a surgeon for almost 2 decades now. I stopped counting the surgeries that I’ve done after 1500+ surgeries and that was about 5 years ago. I’m blessed to be one of the few doctors who’s success ratio is among the best in my area of speciality. However, let me promise you something very important. Every time I enter the OT, I ensure that I don’t carry the baggage of my past and I always make sure to apply my learnings from my experience. I promise you I’m going to operate today like this is my most important surgery, because it really is. Any human is only as good as their latest work and that’s the only statistic that matters.”
You and the other two of your family members look at each other.
Tell me how are you feeling?
I hope the words you’d say are on the lines of relieved, hopeful, grateful, etc.
However, there is a very important business/ career lesson in that paragraph.
Can you guess what is it?
Any human is only as good as their latest work and that’s the only statistic that matters.
Doesn’t matter if you were a valedictorian of your batch, doesn’t matter if you’ve overcome thousands of challenges in your career, doesn’t matter if you’ve completed hundreds of projects in the last one year.
The only thing that matters is what you bring to the table, TODAY.
Would you appreciate and love a movie just because it is created by your favourite actor/ director? The past track record of an artist will get you to the multiplex, but the love that a movie earns from the audience is dependent on the quality of the product served.
A restaurant that has been in business for decades can get shut within weeks, if they start serving questionable quality food and/ or if their service starts faltering. The restaurant has to serve every table like it's the most important table, every time.
Similarly, make sure you leave your baggage of your wins and accolades at the door, every time you enter your work place. Your past gets you the right to enter the workplace, but the quality of what you do today will keep you where you are and help you to keep moving forward.
