Introduction
In business, positioning is either your biggest secret of success or your fastest route to failure. It decides whether people connect with your product — or ignore it.
And you don’t have to look far for an example.
Just check what’s happening with Hindi movies lately.
The Positioning Mistake Bollywood Is Making
For some reason, many Bollywood directors today are trying to create movies that appeal to audiences worldwide.
Now, there’s nothing wrong with going global.
But here’s the catch — in chasing international appreciation, they’ve started ignoring their biggest audience: the Indian moviegoer.
The "core customer" of Hindi movies are people from India who are ready to spend money at theatres to get entertained. They are the primary audience.
When your primary product stops speaking to your core customer, you’re headed for trouble.
What the South Indian Film Industry Got Right
Now look at the South Indian film industry.
They’ve taken a completely different approach:
- They create movies that are authentic to their culture and audience
- They don’t tweak their storytelling for the global stage
- They dub the films into Hindi and other languages — without changing the heart of the story
- Their marketing focuses on making the audience curious about their unique flavor of cinema
And guess what?
Those films are breaking records even in North India.
Why?
Because audiences value authenticity more than forced international appeal.
The Business Lesson Here
Always serve your core audience first.
Position your product for the people most likely to buy from you.
Once you win them over, you can think about expanding.
But never at the cost of alienating your loyal market.
It’s a timeless lesson — whether you’re making movies, building a business, or launching a product.
