Prevent Mental Breakdown: This Simple Yet Powerful Habit Will Save You
This could be the master key to mental well-being for millions of people across the world. Ready to become invincible?
This is the 155th consecutive post on MrEmogical Notes. If you’ve been following this series and are finding value from this blog/ newsletter, please consider sharing this post with one person who you feel needs to read this for their betterment.
Introduction
Have you ever heard of the statement/ saying, “at times, you’re your worst enemy”?
By the end of this note, you will get a thorough understanding that there is a lot of merit to this statement.
Not just that, you will also learn how this idea works, how to avoid the biggest mistake and not become an enemy of your own self, I also share an example from my own life in full transparency with the hope that this idea will help you on your journey.
All in all, this note is going to be a rather layered one.
So, let’s get started.
Who are You?
Sounds like a vague question to begin with, right?
Actually, it’s anything but vague. In fact, when you understand the impact of this question in your life, you will realise how your answer to this question actually helps you to determine if you could/ will end up becoming your own enemy down the road.
So, try answering this question.
Who are you?
What defines you/ your existence?
How do you want the world to perceive/ look at you?
How similar/ close are you to that perceived version of yourself, from your current version?
Answer to all of these questions is what’s called/ referred to as the “self-concept” in the world of psychological studies.
Your answer to the self–concept question determines if you’re on the path to becoming your best friend or your own enemy.
So, before you read ahead, I’d like you to answer this question for yourself, in 5-6 statements that you feel explain/ describe your self-concept in the best possible manner.
Biggest mistake people make with self-concept
I hope you didn’t skip on the exercise mentioned earlier.
Please refer to your answer to self-concept and see how many aspects of your answer are not in your control?
By that, I mean, how many aspects of your answer can be taken away from you/ your life.
For example, if one of the points about your self-concept is associated with your job/ profession/ business, that can be taken away from you, right? Until a few years ago, millions of people around the world were in the business of selling music cds/ DVDs of the movies. If their self-concept was that of being a music/ movie dealer, do you see how extinction of the entire industry also managed to wipe away their self-concept?
If your self-concept is that you’re a parent/ partner/ sibling, do you realise those relationships are true to your identity today, but those relationships are not in your control. God forbid, but what if an important relative/ family member passes away? Wouldn’t that have a severe impact on your self-concept almost immediately?
Imagine your self-concept to be the pillars of your personality, your mental health, your life.
If the pillars of your life are not in your control, do you realise what sort of risk you are putting yourself into?
How to avoid this?
Let’s talk about how you can avoid this mistake/ situation and take complete control of your self-concept?
By now, I’m sure you must have connected the dots.
You need to be mindful and find a way to define your self-concept where there are no dependencies on factors/ situations/ relationships/ people who are not entirely in your control.
I know this may seem like an insensitive thing to do, but in the long run, only when you feel at your strongest (with regards to your mental and emotional well-being) will you be able to thrive and operate from the most sensitive aspects of your personality.
My self-concept
To help you understand how you can carve out your self-concept without having any external dependencies, I present to you my version of my self-concept. I hope this helps you understand how you can customize your self-concept based on your life situations.
My self-concept is:
01 - I am a content creator
Please note that I’m not identifying as a YouTuber/ podcaster/ Instagrammer/ influencer. As a content creator, I'm platform agnostic and wherever I find a window to express myself without any inhibitions and if I can connect with my target audience, I’ll happily adapt to that platform as a content creator.
Being a content creator is entirely in my control.
02 - I teach people
At the moment, I’m a Financial Abundance Coach for my business, “Paycheck To Profit”. As a financial abundance coach, I connect with millennials and gen-z from across the world, and teach them about subjects like money mindset, money blocks, law of attraction, financial literacy, etc.
As an independent consultant, I also help business owners, content creators and working professionals as a case-to-case basis, but what’s far more important is that I don’t label myself as a financial abundance coach/ consultant for first time entrepreneurs.
As time passes by, if need be, I can pivot and change my titles, but I know for a fact that I’ll continue to look for ways to help people achieve transformations through my teaching/ mentorship.
03 - I bring clarity through my communication
While clear communication is a big challenge for millions of people across the world, I’m extremely grateful to have managed to learn this skill to the point where I treat it as one of my strengths.
Am I the best communicator/ orator? No, but am I far better than an average Joe/ Jane? Based on my understanding and experience, I can humbly say that with a fair amount of confidence.
Do I provide clarity through my communication? Yes. How/ why else would you read this note until this point?
Can I keep improving my communication skills? Most definitely (and I know I’ll keep sharpening this skill with/ over time).
Can anybody take away this skill from me? Not at all.
04 - I value growth in all aspects of my life
As a coach/ mentor and more importantly, as an individual who’s deeply invested in the process of personal development for almost a decade now, I can easily say growth is an extremely important driving factor of my life.
I seek growth in all aspects of my life which would include health, relationships, business, mindset, network, finances etc.
Again, this is an aspect of my life which is pretty much irreversible and impossible to take away from me by any external source.
05 - The more impact I create, the more growth and money I make
While the world is obsessed with wanting to make money, my mentors have helped me redefine my relationship with money.
My area of focus in life is never going to be money.
Money for me is a byproduct, a given reward should I make a positive difference in someone’s life.
I’m not looking to extract/ make a lot of money in the short run.
My focus is on creating value in my ecosystem, and the money I make is a byproduct of all the value that I provide and the impact that my value (content/ coaching/ mentorship) creates.
Who knows, I may end up getting one (or many) consulting/ coaching clients through this note.
Is the intention behind writing this note to generate customers? No. If that would have been the case, don’t you think the tonality of this note would have been extremely sales oriented and not so educational?
However, does this note (and over 100+ others on this blog, as I type), my videos on YouTube across two channels (MrEmogical and Paycheck To Profit) create a solid case that I believe in providing unadulterated value to my community? Yes.
Can this be taken away from me? No. This is mine to keep.
Conclusion
Hope me sharing my self-concept with you has given you the perspective, knowledge, ideas and inspiration to build your self-concept.
Start working on this exercise. It’s not necessary to come up with an answer instantly, in a day. But, at least now, you will start working on this exercise with the right perspective and that’s what matters.
Finding your answer/ reply to your self concept is a tall order. It took me a few years to arrive at this level of clarity and to handcraft this version of my self-concept. If you’re struggling with your self-concept and would like to get some help, feel free to reach out to me and let’s connect.
