The Only Time When Negative Thinking Gets You Positive Results
Let’s change our thought process about negative thinking once and for all
People who say negative thinking is bad, don’t know how to utilize it as a resource.
(That’s like saying owning a knife could turn someone into a murderer)
First things first, let’s clear the cloud(s).
If negative thinking was bad, why would terms like “look for a silver lining”, “think about the worst-case scenario” exist to begin with?
As I mentioned earlier, there’s a way to convert your negative thinking into a tool that could become an essential step in achieving all your goals.
Imagine having access to such a powerful (for leak of a better word) weapon.
Before I teach you how to use this weapon, it’s crucial for you to understand that like any weapon, if this exercise is used incorrectly, it could backfire, so beware.
The secret to using this exercise is to actually seek a solution amidst all the negativity.
Only when you enter this exercise with this intention will you be able to find the way.
Imagine the problem to be the forest, and negative thoughts to be the way out.
I know this may seem ironic, but I promise this will make sense in just a few minutes.
So, the problem/ challenge you’re facing is the jungle, and the negative thought process is the solution.
This exercise will play the role of a powerful flashlight that allows you to walk on the path, rather than get lost among the trees of the forest.
So, how does this exercise work?
It’s easier than you think.
01. Establish the nature of the problem/ challenge you’re facing.
02. Imagine the worst case scenario that this problem can/ is causing.
03. Now imagine yourself to be in the middle of this worst case scenario.
04. Set the intention that despite being stuck in the middle of the worst case scenario, you will only focus on finding your way out of the situation.
05. Determine what the desired end result should look like for you.
06. Now start walking on the path and just to be clear, start writing the path ahead in your journal/ notebook. This doesn’t have to be correct/ accurate. It just has to be humanly possible.
07. Start walking on the path that your mind is showing you and make a note of all the milestones, people who help you, stages you will cross, etc. until you cross the finishing line.
08. Examine the path again, and make necessary changes, if you can think of any.
09. Start walking on the path and keep walking until you reach your desired finishing line and let your exercise notes act as your roadmap.
You will be surprised (read: shocked) how the situation that felt like a mountain starts reducing with every step you take.
Our mind acts in funny ways to protect us, but what you probably don’t realize, that your mind is also an excellent team member. If you hand over a set of instructions, it will happily become your obedient team member and walk on the path you provide/ suggest.
Once you start walking, you will realize that more often than not, the roadmap you created acts out pretty similar to your visualized journey, and even if there are any dead ends, once your mind has activated the end goal, it will find a solution, one way or the other.
