What characteristics do you need to sell?
Sales is all about communicating with utmost honesty, sincerity, empathy, confidence, and conviction.
Honesty
You’re supposed to be honest about the promises you make to the prospect. Every promise you make to the prospect must be delivered once the purchase is made by the client and when they end up using the product/service.
Sincerity
You’re supposed to be sincere about the limitations of the product/ service as compared to other alternatives or if your product is incapable of delivering on some expectations of the prospect.
Empathy
You’re supposed to be empathetic to the needs, wants and other emotions of your prospect. It pains me to see when a salesperson looks (and treats) their prospects only as “a lead” and has zero empathy for the situation that the human being is going through.
The moment you inculcate this aspect in your sales pitch, you will see an absolute shoot in your sales numbers, without making any other changes to your offer.
Confidence
Confidence in sales is a function of practice and experience. You need to understand the pain points of your prospects, their mindset, the features and benefits of your product/ offer at the back of your hand.
Ideally, you’re also supposed to be prepared with a substantial understanding of the alternatives available in the market and limitations of those alternatives. The cherry on the cake could be if the limitation of your competitors offers is a strength of your business/ sales offer.
Conviction
Finally, the most important characteristic of a successful sale is your conviction. Conviction of the deliverables, convictions of the effectiveness of your product/ service and most importantly, conviction in every word that you communicate to your prospect in the sales meeting.
When you’re clear about your conviction, you will unlock the most powerful secret of the best salespeople around the world.
The most powerful secret of the best salespeople
This may shock/ surprise you.
The most powerful secret of the best salespeople is that they’re not bothered if the sales meeting leads to a successful outcome or if the prospect decides to decline the offer.
Imagine this, what else can a salesperson humanly do besides
- communicating with utmost honesty,
- being absolutely sincere,
- treating the situation of the prospect with empathy,
- being confident about the deliverables that are being guaranteed after purchase, and
- communicating with utmost conviction?
There’s practically nothing more; that a salesperson can do beyond these parameters.
So, a salesperson worth their salt practices enough offers that after one point, they are absolutely stoic about the outcome of the sales meeting.
Only when you’re detached from the end result of the meeting, will you actually become a much better salesperson.
When a salesperson is not entirely detached to the outcome of the sales process, they tend to act restless, impatient and pushy to the prospect.
That energy ends up doing terrible damage to even the best of the best products/ services.
