Understanding the 6 Levels in a Company — And Where You Fit In
Irrespective of your career/business goals, you need to be clear about one aspect of your work life.
Look at any successful team/company, you will notice that people operate at different levels.
Each level requires a unique mindset, skill set, and intention.
Depending on your skill sets, attitude, career goals, personal vision, and educational background, you can plan to aim for any of these levels.
In today’s note, let’s understand all six levels so that you can get clarity on where/ how you fit in (the big picture).
01 - The Founder
The one who starts it all. Sets the vision and builds the foundation. Carries the maximum risk and takes responsibility for everything.
Often works across all areas—product, sales, people, systems—especially in early stages.
Not everyone wants to be a founder. But if you do, you will have to build a character of courage, resilience, and long-term vision.
02 - Chiefs / Leaders (CXOs)
This includes roles like CEO, COO, CMO, CTO, etc. These are the people who translate the founder’s vision into actionable strategies.
They lead critical verticals and play a pivotal role in scaling the business. If this is your aspiration, you will need deep expertise, leadership experience, and the ability to make tough decisions.
03 - Team/ Domain Experts (Senior Leaders)
They are specialists in their domain: Marketing, Finance, Tech, HR, Operations, etc. Often known for their depth of knowledge. They mentor managers and support chiefs in executing strategic plans.
Perfect for those who love mastering their craft and contributing as experts.
04 - Managers
The bridge between strategy and execution. Responsible for managing people, processes, and outcomes. Managers must be good at people skills, timelines, and conflict resolution.
The role of a manager is ideal (for you) if you’re someone who loves leading teams and managing outcomes.
05 - Team Members
The heart of the execution engine. These are your designers, developers, salespeople, marketers, operations staff, etc. They work on projects, tasks, campaigns, and daily operations.
A solid space to grow your skills, explore different roles, and build credibility.
06 - Freshers / Support Team / Interns / Apprentices
This is where the journey starts for everyone. People at this level usually support teams and learn how the business runs. The focus is on learning, contributing, and building a foundation.
If you're here now, don’t rush. This is the time to absorb, observe, and evolve.
So, Where Do You See Yourself?
The beauty of this structure is that there’s no wrong level.
It all depends on:
Your goals, lifestyle choices, educational background, willingness to take ownership/responsibility, leadership skills, and many other variables.
And remember: You can move between levels as you grow. Some people start as interns and become founders, while others start at mid-level and become top domain leaders.
There’s no fixed path.
But there is a path.
And it begins with clarity.
