Preface
If you’ve been following me for a while, you’d agree that I’m generally “the glass half full” sort of a guy.
However, there’s one thing that I’ve been particularly worried about that I’d like to focus on in today’s note.
This is a subject that I’ve discussed in some of the earlier notes, but I think the perspective that I’m going to share today will hit home for many, so here goes.
What does life look like in 2035?
You wake up and Artificial Intelligence (AI) analyses your sleep patterns and keeps a report ready to inform you how your energy levels are expected to be through the day.
You freshen up and start your workout in front of a device (imagine a mirror/ screen) where an AI trainer is checking your form, giving you the right cues, the right push and it's also checking your form, your pose, and your calories that you’re burning.
You sit to eat your meals, and you tap on an app to share what’s your mood today and the breakfast reaches your doorstep. The app is using AI to find you the best options. The kitchen of the restaurant/ service provider is using AI to create food that’s catering to your health profile and taste choices.
This is just the start, but I hope you’re appreciating this image.
Even before you have your first morsel of the day, you will be using at least 3-5 AI applications/ services first hand, and every service provider would be using 3-5 AI models to process your data and give you personalized guidance/ reports/ results.
I can go on and type another 2500 words to tell you how AI is going to get infused in every aspect of our life, pretty much the way the internet has now become akin (almost) to oxygen in our existence.
Where do you stand?
I really can’t think of any knowledge-based job that AI won’t be capable of doing better than humans.
Data analysis, coding, designing, content creation…. If the outcome of your job is intangible (which is almost the case for over 80%+ people in today’s times), brace yourself for an AI machine that would cost your employer about $10,000 (with a monthly subscription of $100) to replace you for life.
I know some of you must be heaving a sigh of relief thinking “$10,000 for a machine and $100 monthly subscription! My company would never be able to afford that.”
Let me ask you a counter question here… “Could you imagine that you’d be using the phone that you’re using today, about 10 years ago? Could you afford the devices you’re using today a decade ago?”
The idea is simple. AI doesn’t sleep, doesn’t take loo breaks, doesn’t want holidays, doesn’t post/ consume content about work-life balance, doesn’t need a maternity/ paternity break.
In simple words, imagine your company replacing you with someone who works 24*7 and gives output that’s 10X more than your current output, in 1/10th the time.”
AI is going to replace your job or make your business obsolete (as you know it today).
That’s a fact.
The question you really need to answer is…
How are you going to deal with this situation?
Long story short, you have only one option.
How I wish I was exaggerating this.
There’s only one way to excel in the world of AI.
You don’t fight AI (because we know who will win that battle, and we know that’s not you).
You will have to fight your next competitor.
The other human who’s doing a job like yours.
You have to get better at bringing more value to the table than the other person in your company/ industry.
How do you compete with others?
By bringing a skill that’s rare and valuable today.
The best aspect of this situation. This skill that I’m going to mention is only set to get a lot rarer and a lot more valuable than it is today.
Time for the grand reveal.
This skill is “problem solving”.
Wondering how this falls into place?
Let me explain.
The only way to solve the problem is to:
01 - Understand the problem
02 - Articulate the problem
03 - Think of multiple alternative solutions
04 - Evaluate and select the best option from all the alternatives present
05 - Executing the chosen alternative
06 - Getting the desired result (and in case of failure, choosing the next option, and executing the second alternative, until you arrive at the solution).
Read the 6 aforementioned points again.
Are you seeing the gap that you need to fill?
One job that will fetch top dollar paychecks is when humans in the future will be able to understand the problem and articulate the problem with absolute clarity in the shortest amount of time and in simple language (read: AI prompts)
That’s it.
That’s going to be the expectations from humans in the future (for the most part).
Because if you read carefully, point 03 - 06 is exactly what every AI model is being trained on as of today.
We have already started seeing results on how AI is overtaking geniuses in multiple domains.
It’s only a matter of time before AI learns every trick of the trade and replaces you (in your current role).
However, the first 2 points are (and shall remain) AIs Achilles heel.
AI is like the diligent front bencher student who will do all the homework but will never study beyond the curriculum.
The world where AI overtakes jobs (in today’s form) of 98% of humans will create an insatiable demand for backbencher students who can think beyond the textbook and get their work done.
Enough said.
