Introduction
When I was in school, I deeply admired the father of one of my closest friends.
He lived a lifestyle that fascinated me. He was successful, respected, and even owned the best car in town at that time.
Recently, I met him again, and despite all the years that had passed, he welcomed me with the same warmth.
Out of curiosity, I asked him a simple question:
“If you could share just one tip about business with the world, what would it be?”
His answer surprised me with its simplicity and timelessness.
The two fundamentals he always focused on
Without using fancy jargon, he explained that throughout his entire life as a business owner, he focused only on two parameters:
Reducing CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost)
He said he always tried to lower the cost of acquiring a customer—but never at the expense of quality.
For him, efficiency and creativity were the keys to attracting new customers without overspending.
Increasing LTV (Lifetime Value of a Customer)
Once a customer came on board, he made it his mission to serve them so well that they would keep coming back.
By creating systems, processes, and offerings that solved more and more of their needs, he kept extending the lifetime value of every customer.
Why this matters more than ever today
What struck me most was that he didn’t even know these terms.
CAC and LTV are common buzzwords in today’s internet and startup world.
Yet, he had been applying these principles for decades in his offline businesses.
At its core, business hasn’t changed. The fundamentals remain the same:
- Lower the cost of getting customers.
- Increase the value you deliver so they stay with you longer.
If you can master these two levers, you’ll not just grow, you’ll thrive in any industry.
A timeless strategy for every entrepreneur
Looking at his advice from the most basic point of view, I realized something profound:
If you can continuously find ways to reduce your customer acquisition cost, while also expanding the lifetime value of your customers, you will always be among the best businesses in your market.
It’s simple, powerful, and timeless.
Sometimes, the best lessons in business come from those who quietly mastered the fundamentals long before the world gave them fancy names.
