The New Non-Negotiable For Building a Strong Business Culture
The writing is on the wall. The sooner you get the message the better for (the longevity of) your business.
This is the 157th consecutive post on MrEmogical Notes. If you’ve been following this series and are finding value from this blog/ newsletter, please consider sharing this post with one person who you feel needs to read this for their betterment.
Introduction
Can you live your life comfortably in today’s times, with a horse being your mode of transport?
If you’re chuckling (or maybe even judging me), thinking how can I even mention such a preposterous idea, it’s time for me to ask you a follow up question.
If the modes of transportation have changed, if the sheer amount of technology that we have access to has multiplied with the number of devices, softwares and applications, why is it that the rules of the organizations haven’t been updated in the last 2 decades ever since the technology has become rather ubiquitous.
It’s high time companies start implementing the work culture that suits the need of the hour and your new team members (gen-z and beyond).
Status Quo
Let’s look at how life and priorities look like for Gen-Z
01 - They prioritise mental health over their careers
02 - They value experiences and wouldn’t mind sacrificing their job responsibilities (with due notice and information) and their pay for a couple of days.
03 - Their understanding of and need for “me time” is non-negotiable.
So, if you wish to get your company to grow, you will have to recruit your new workforce whose expectations from life and job are absolutely different from yours.
I don’t see automations and robots becoming commonplace for at least another 10-15 years, so it’s best if you realign the organizational culture that blends with the expectations and working (read: living) style of Gen-Z.
The Organizational Culture For Gen-Z and beyond
If you just implement just one strict policy for your company, it could bridge the gap between expectations of Gen-Z workforce and the way your company has been operating till date.
The simple change in policy that you need to implement is, “no work calls/ emails will be entertained beyond working hours.”
Let’s be honest to ourselves.
Every company has some version of this policy on paper, but it's never really been put into practice.
The emails, the messages, client requests, managers stinkers just don’t seem to end.
The world can’t create a slew of “bad bosses” stories without having experienced any.
It’s high time we companies and corporations understand that the party of unreasonable expectations should have ended a decade and a half ago.
What worked with boomers and millennials won’t work with the gen-z work force.
