What does an author do besides writing?

Excelling at any aspect of life demands a lot more than what meets the eye

(Let's try and understand this with an author as an example)

What do you think does an author need to do, to ensure that their book reaches the right and the intended audience?

Most people will say that this is a rather trivial question, and the answer is to "write a good book".

However, there's so much more that goes into converting an idea into a best-selling book.

Let's try and break this down into tasks, shall we?

Following are the tasks that I could think of (and I'm not even in the process of writing a book, yet)

01. Write the book (this includes writing multiple drafts)
02. Create content to build connections with target audience
03. Become an authority
04. Create a newsletter (to keep in touch with your audience)
05. Appear on podcasts
06. Market your book
07. Do store visit and signings
08. Share reviews and stories on social media
09. Attend book clubs/ literary fests
10. Sell the book

By no means this is an exhaustive list. I've not added any aspects of getting picked up by a literary agent, the process of getting selected after approaching multiple publishing houses, negotiating a publishing deal, book cover design, sending out advance reader copies, etc.

Imagine this, a mistake at any stage could sabotage the entire journey of the book, so an "author" (who's job on paper is just to write a book) can't afford to skip any of the aforementioned tasks.

I hope you're getting the message that I'm trying to bring to your notice here.

It's very easy to comment on someone's success or feel that someone's job is so simple/ easy.

Next time you see someone passing a comment on how something is just so easy, or catch yourself thinking that someone's life seems easy, remember that there are multiple hurdles that they had to jump through that you are unaware of.
