Is it Really Compulsory for All Content Creators To Create "Unique" Content All The Time?
What if I told you being unique is not even a part of the minimum requirement of content creation?
This is the 134th consecutive post on MrEmogical Notes. If you’ve been following this series and are finding value from this blog/ newsletter, please consider sharing this post with one person who you feel needs to read this for their betterment.
Introduction
I had a dream that I'd like to tell you about.
In this dream, I ended up visiting a beautiful beautiful world.
You won’t believe what was one of the most beautiful qualities of this world.
In this world, everyone reading this note was a content creator.
Yes, you are a big content creator in this world.
Do you know what helped you to become a really popular content creator in that world?
Well, I did have a conversation with you in that world, and I insist you keep reading so that you get to know what you (from the other world in the multiverse) told me about your content creation journey.
The world of content creation
Today’s world seems extremely saturated with content creators, right?
Absolutely wrong.
It’s a flawed notion that the world of content creation is saturated.
There is a lot of headroom to grow for those who are serious about the prospects of slow and steady growth in the content creation space.
Trouble is that most people don’t even start because they magically find multiple reasons why their content creation pursuits will fail within days (if not weeks) of starting this journey.
One of the most common reasons why people (probably even you included) aren’t starting your content creation journey because you’re afraid.
You’re afraid of the fact (read: myth) that “your content won’t be unique” and that’s one idea that the version of you that I met in the parallel universe doesn’t fear.
This is what you told me, when I met you in the other universe.
The myth of “being unique”
In the parallel universe, you’re doing the exact same work that you’re doing today.
The exact same niche, the exact same role that you’re trying to create for yourself, just that you’re also a popular content creator and you have a large following.
I asked you, “how do you not fear the challenges of creating unique content?”
And your reply was, “Hey Manish! What are you saying? All of my content is absolutely, 100% authentically unique.”
I asked you for more clarity and you said, “The moment I’m facing the camera and speaking, whatever I’m saying is true and unique to me.”
I asked, but then, what if someone else has already created a video on that subject?
You smiled and you said, “Of course they would have, but why would I care about that?”
I asked, “but isn’t that a red flag? Does your audience not call you out/ troll you to be a copycat or something?”
You said, “Aaah! Now I see what you mean. You have got this all wrong my friend. Tell me something, if someone were to become a content creator, and if they create a video on how to do surya namaskar (sun salutation), would that be copying thousands of other creators?”
I was stunned.
You continued, “Creating content that’s true to me, based on my experience, and based on my current understanding is always going to be termed as unique content.”
That’s when the penny drop moment happened for me.
There are no unique ideas left in this (or any other) Universe.
Our job is to pick out ideas that resonate with us and which we are comfortable to share with our face and personal brand on it.
Just make sure to avoid the following pitfalls of content creation
Pitfalls that you need to avoid
01 - Never plagiarize content
Get inspired by others' content but always present your content in your own style. Don’t recreate what inspires you, frame by frame.
02 - Create for your niche
Content creation gets you best results when you create content for a very specific target audience. Don’t apply the spray and pray technique with content creation
03 - Don’t create content without a purpose
Find a funnel, an end goal, a call to action that you’d want your audience to experience when they consume your content
04 - Don’t just create, also engage
The journey of content creation is incomplete without engaging with your audience. Focus on replying to every comment/ DM until it becomes virtually impossible. But until then, give this task just as much importance as content creation
05 - Don’t underestimate storytelling
Content creation is elevated when you add the magic of storytelling in your content. The better you narrate your stories, the better would be the end result of your content creation journey.
What makes you unique
Also, just in case if you didn’t catch the idea shared earlier, the moment you create your content, on an idea that you feel inspired by, that content is unique to you and your audience.
Share your stories, your experience, your point of view and give a personal touch to your content.
Imagine if 100 people watch a movie/ read a book and decide to create a video about the piece of media they have consumed, don’t you think there will be a lot of similarities in all of these videos?
Only when you add your true point of view, thoughts and experience in your content will your content stand out and resonate instantly with your audience.
I’m not saying this out of my expert opinion.
You shared all this with me, I mean the other version of you from that other world *insert wink here*
