Why 90% of Businesses Fail Within the First Five Years
Before you start a business, ask: Am I trained enough?
This is the 239th consecutive post on MrEmogical Notes. If you’ve been following this series and are finding value from this blog/ newsletter, please consider sharing this post with one person who you feel needs to read this for their betterment.
Introduction
It is said that more than 90% of businesses fail within their first five years.
Why does this happen?
There are, of course, hundreds of reasons you could put on paper; bad market conditions, poor management, financial troubles, bad timing, and so on.
But to understand it, you must zoom out and look at the big picture.
The Cricket Analogy
If someone wants to become a cricketer, would you throw them straight into an international match against a world-class team in a packed stadium?
Of course not.
You would train them endlessly, make them practice every single day, and help them play local matches, league tournaments, and smaller games.
Allow them to win some, lose some, and learn from every experience.
Only after they become seasoned players would they be ready for the big stage.
What Happens in Business
When it comes to business, though, people often start with high hopes, big dreams, and endless excitement — but very little training or preparation.
They don’t understand the rules of the business world or know how to handle pressure, challenges, or uncertainties.
They don't have the experience of dealing with small mistakes before facing big ones.
Instead, they jump straight into the “international match” of business, and unfortunately, most are not ready for the intensity.
That’s why every single day, more and more businesses get crushed under the challenges of the business world.
Not because the dream was wrong, but because the preparation was missing.
Key Takeaway
Starting a business is like becoming an athlete. You can’t win just because you’re excited. You win because you're prepared, you're trained, and you have battle-tested experience.
If you're thinking of starting a business:
Spend time learning the game.
Make smaller moves first.
Build your skills and resilience early on.
That's how you give yourself a real fighting chance.
