Answer with a Yes/ No
If you are serious about building a business, here is a truth that will test your character:
Are you comfortable firing someone who is not the right fit?
Why does this matter?
It is never easy. But it is always necessary.
Let's be honest —
Firing someone is never a pleasant experience.
But when you realize that a person is not suited for the role, when their presence affects team performance, productivity, or culture; you must make the tough call.
Because your first responsibility is the overall health of your business.
Be Firm, But Be Human
Letting someone go does not mean being cruel.
You can — and should — handle it with grace.
Offer a reasonable severance package (if applicable).
Help them with a reference letter focused on their strengths.
Support them in finding their next role if you can.
But don’t hold on to someone out of guilt or emotional hesitation.
In the long run, it hurts everyone — The team. The culture. The business.
And even the person you’re not letting go.
Final Thought
Every strong business owner must learn to make emotionally tough decisions with empathy but without hesitation.
Leadership is not about being liked, it is about doing what is right — even when it is hard.
