Why Passion Alone Won’t Make You Successful (And What Will)
The Harsh Truth: Passion Won’t Pay the Bills—Skills Will
This is the 202nd consecutive post on MrEmogical Notes. If you’ve been following this series and are finding value from this blog/ newsletter, please consider sharing this post with one person who you feel needs to read this for their betterment.
Introduction
Sometimes life gives us very logical choices, but the ecosystem around us overwhelms us with ideas that are full of contradictions and are miles away from clarity.
This note double clicks on one such idea which is responsible for millions of people globally being in a financial lurch.
The tug-of-war between passion and/or skills and talent.
Passion or Talent? How to choose?
I was once watching a podcast and the excerpt that I’m going to share with you below was nothing short of a life changer.
Following is a recreation of an excerpt from that interview between the podcaster (P) and the guest (g)
P: What’s the best advice you’d like to share with the audience member who’s working on or is struggling with their career/ business?
G: Invest in your skills and capitalise on your talents
P: What’s the worst advice you’ve received from someone with regards to career/ business?
G: Follow your passion
Sounds counterintuitive, right?
But there’s nothing more truthful about success than the words mentioned in these 3-4 lines.
A miniscule percentage of people in the world manage to find a way to convert their true passion into a well paying career/ business.
But you should never place all your bets on that strategy. Frankly, it isn’t even a strategy, it’s a hope, a prayer at best.
The most practical and predictable way to achieve success in your business/ career is simple.
Find a skill/ talent that you’re good at. Invest time, effort, energy and resources in excelling at that skill and find a career/ business where you can monetize on this skill and/ or talent.
Not all passionate people get rich, but all skillful/ talented people who learn how to monetize their best talent make a mark in their area of expertise.
