The Hidden Benefits of Impactful Social Media Content
The difference in mindset of content creators who are struggling versus the ones at the top of the (content) food chain.
Introduction
What comes to your mind the moment I tell you “content creator”?
Depending on your average screen time per day on social media apps you may say the words like collaborations, viral content, memes, travel, lifestyle, followers, etc.
How would you react if I tell you, in the bigger scheme of things, that’s probably the worst way to look at the entire content creation game.
Keep reading till the end with an open mind to know what the top-tier of content creation clout look like.
Status Quo
First, let’s ensure you and I are on the same page.
If someone was to ask me to describe the status quo of the content creation game in 5 words/ phrases, this is how I would describe the situation.
1. Glamorous lifestyle
2. Entertaining (and trend based) content
3. Subtle and not so subtle product promotion
4. Questionable ethics due to lack of transparency (on the side of brands and/or content creators)
5. Followers are being treated as a number/ commodity
I hope you resonate with these sentiments.
However, it’s high time a new wave of creators enters the scene and dethrone the existing clique of creators who are looking at every post as a money printing machine.
Before I move ahead, it's important for me to communicate a clear disclaimer here. I’m not averse to using social media as a platform to generate an income.
In fact, I think it's one of the best ways to create your personal brand (which leads to large revenues).
I’m just suggesting an alternative route for those who are open to embracing a new point of view.
The Magic of Content Creation
What’s the biggest gain of every content creator with regards to their community (read: subscribers/ followers).
Let’s take this post/ note/ blog for example.
I’m a content creator, and you’re my audience (Sidebar: Immense gratitude for being a part of this community).
What am I getting from you?
What do you think you offer to me?
The Two Intangible Currencies
What if I tell you, that you bring to the table two of the most important intangible currencies in the world, value of both of which is worth its weight in gold.
The two intangible currencies that I earn from you are:
1. Trust, and
2. Time
How do I earn these two currencies from you every time?
1. Every time I create a post that gives you value, and you read my post till the end, I earn your trust, and
2. Every time I create content that’s written in a manner that’s easy to read, you give me your time.
Challenge with the mindset of current content creators!
The most frivolous short-term thinking mindset of most content creators is to capitalise on the trust and time of their community with every post.
However, what if I can teach you how to convert every unit of trust and time that you earn from your community into a lifetime of returns?
The Opportunity
Every time a creator gets a click on their content from their community member, that’s a handshake, an opportunity to build a much bigger personal brand.
Every view, every click, every second that your community gives you, helps you to grow on social media.
While an occasional brand collaboration is perfectly alright. You know what’s the best way to capitalize on your personal brand?
By using your personal brand to only be a vehicle of value.
Don’t use your content brand as an opportunity to sell, use it as a platform to gain more trust and time from your audience.
The audience today is starting to get immune to creators who are trying to sell something in every post.
Give it some time and you’d see the return on investments for brands on social media marketing (with popular content creators) will start dipping.
The ripples have already started to form across social media.
In the next few lines, I’ll tell you how you can optimize your social media content and your personal brand to generate unlimited revenues in the long run.
Conclusion
The rule is simple.
Do not sell on social media.
Sell via social media.
What’s the difference you ask?
It’s subtle but very powerful.
When you give genuine value and quality content every time, the trust in the (subconscious) mind of your target audience keeps growing.
Keep creating content and keep reminding your audience about the work you do.
For example, if you’ve been a regular MrEmogical Notes; by now I’m sure you know I’m the founder of Paycheck To Profit where I teach millennials and gen-z participants how to unlock the abundance.
I have managed to get a lot of subscribers/ customers in Paycheck To Profit from people who got connected to me through my social media content.
And I don’t post dance videos, I don’t follow trends on social media. My content is on the diagonally opposite side of the entertaining content spectrum, and yet my personal brand is creating its space in the minds of my target audience.
I also get DMs very often wherein subscribers/ followers connect with me asking me for consulting services to help them with their businesses.
So, while you’re getting value reading this post, a few other subscribers have already signed up with me for a premium service of annual consulting for growing their business, by connecting with me on social media.
I’m grateful for both the categories of audiences. You, for continuing to trust me and reward me with your time and attention, and others who are trusting me with their growth and giving me an opportunity to help them via coaching and consulting.
Long story short, when you create quality content relentlessly and consistently, the compounded returns of your personal brand are far more exponential than the money you’d make if you’re promoting an app today, and an apparel brand tomorrow and a (ultra-processed) food brand the day after.
It’s all about patience, consistency and authenticity of your content strategy.
