Astonishing And Easy Way To Go Viral on Social Media
It may not be easy to go viral, but the format of all viral posts is the same.
The easiest thing to do today is to become a content creator.
One of the most difficult things to do today is to become a successful content creator.
Let’s talk about how to bridge the gap between being a content creator and becoming a successful content creator in today’s post.
The biggest drawback of the content creator world
The biggest drawback is mentioned in the first line of this post.
Today practically everyone is a content creator.
The moment you hand over a smartphone and an internet connection to someone, everyone becomes a de facto content creator.
Even if every platform charged just $1 per person per month to create content that reaches beyond their existing followers, we would see a 90% drop in the total number of content creators in the world.
Alas, that’s not happening, so we might as well start looking at ways and means to create content that helps us become a better content creator.
Shall we?
Why are most content creators lost?
The most common reason why most content creators are lost is because they start creating content looking at other creators.
It’s easy for someone who loves dancing to see another dancer on the screen and think, “Hey! I can also dance like this” and there you go, the world gets one more content creator who’s (trying to) compete for views/ likes/ subscribers/ follower/ shares.
You know what’s the worst thing though?
In the real sense, all the metrics of likes/ views/ subscribers/ followers/ shares are metrics that benefit the platform on which you’re creating content.
Read a few quality blogs/ newsletters (congratulations, you’re already reading one) and you will realise all these terms are collectively referred to as “vanity metrics”.
You need these vanity metrics on your journey of growth, however, chasing only vanity metrics is like wanting to get into the world of restaurants but instead of becoming a restaurateur, your ambition is to become a team member (captain/ manager) of the restaurant.
Disclaimer: the last statement is made to suggest that being a restaurateur is an ambition that could get the best results for someone who’s aspiring to get into the field of restaurants, and by no means it’s written to look down upon any other team member of the food and beverage industry
What should be your area of focus?
So, if vanity metrics shouldn’t be your area of focus, what should be?
Let’s continue the restaurant example for just 1 more minute.
Tell me when does a restaurant actually start to unlock its real growth, when they serve 100 new customers every day with most customers liking their experience, or when they serve maybe 90 customers, but every day at least 2-3 customers end up loving the food, service of the restaurant?
Obviously, the latter, right?
That’s what every business (including content creators must focus on.
As a creator, getting views/ likes is exciting, but start focusing on metrics that are more difficult to earn from your audience.
What could these be?
1. A genuine heartfelt comment below your post
2. Someone who takes the effort to share your work with people in their network and gets them to consume your content (how do you measure this? The pieces of content that get shared get more than normal views, and these content pieces win you more subscribers/ followers)
To achieve these metrics, you need to ensure every piece of content of yours is staying true to the 5 most important pillars of content creation
The 5 must haves for every content creator
The following 5 points were originally shared in one of the past posts of this blog/ newsletter and the link to the same is also shared in the “Further Recommendations” section, at the end of this post.
Ensure that every post of yours tries to answer most (most ideally all 5) questions in every piece of content you upload/ post
01. Who is the target audience?
The larger the target audience, the better
02. What do they want?
What's the one burning problem of your target audience that you will solve with your content?
Try and go very specific to define the problem.
03. Who is the enemy?
What are the alternatives available and how do they cause more harm than good (in getting closer to the solution)?
04. How is your content piece different?
What makes your content unique?
This is extremely important to build connection and trust with your audience.
05. Why is this important for you?
What makes you feel emotionally attached to the problem/ target audience?
What's your driving force that keeps you motivated to keep solving the problem for your audience?
The real secret sauce!
While the 5 pillars of content creation are essential for your content to get the love it deserves, we are not done, yet.
What gives your content an absolute push is when your audience is unknowingly forced to connect with your content and consume more and more of it.
By reaching this point in the post, you’ve read 842 words.
That’s almost as long as a newspaper article.
Or maybe 3.5 pages of a book.
I wouldn’t be surprised if a small part of the audience of this blog/ newsletter hasn’t read so many pages in one go in weeks/ months/ (I dread as I type this) maybe even years.
You know what will make you finish reading this post?
The tonality of the post.
Every person who reaches till the end, will only do so because:
1. They found value in this post, and
2. They found the content and the tonality of the post relatable.
This is the only secret sauce of creators that become successful/ go viral.
They speak/ write in a language that’s easy to understand with their target audience.
Speak to your audience in a language that connects with them and see how your average view time, your click through rate, your subscriber percentage (metrics that matter) keep improving with every post.
Is success guaranteed?
Frankly, if after having read this entire post until this point, you’re still looking for “guarantees”, I’d really want you to reflect on your decision (read: whim) to become a content creator.
There are no guarantees in life, my friend.
What’s important for you to note, is that the probabilities of you succeeding as a content creator are tremendously higher when you create a personal brand wherein your focus is on giving value to your audience and focus on building a community.
What I can guarantee is that no creator is going to become successful without creating a strong connection with their audience.
So, speak their language, understand their challenges, communicate with them and show them you understand and help them with their journey
