How Many Features Does Your Product Need to Become Successful?
A case study of a company that has over 80%+ market share
Let’s play a simple quiz.
How many functions do you think a product needs to have to be the top player in the market for over 26 years?
Yes, you read that right. The product that I’m talking about was launched in 1998.
And when I talk about being a leader of the market, take a guess how much is the market share of this product?
Drop a comment below, before you continue reading, so that you can gauge your answers later.
I hope you typed in your reply.
So, with that assurance, let’s continue.
I’m assuming your guess wouldn’t have been as high as 80%+
Right?
Imagine this. I’m talking to you about a company that has more than 80% market share in their industry.
This product has been around for 26 years, and not a single competing player has managed to dethrone this brand/ product from its ruling position in all these years.
Aren’t you intrigued to know the answer?
Allow me just a few more seconds.
I want you to go back to the first question.
How many features do you think it takes to create and hold such a strong dominating position?
Before I reveal the name of the product, I want to tell you the number of features this product provides.
The answer is JUST ONE!
Yes. You read that right.
Just one product. Just one feature. About 26 years in existence, and it has more than 80%+ market share, till date.
The product that I’m talking about is “GOOGLE”.
Yes. The search engine.
The product has had innumerable iterations. But till date, it has just 1 feature. Search the web. Period.
Yes, the company has come up with multiple new services (email, calendar, video uploads, etc.) but you don’t need to use any of the other products to get the benefit of the Google search engine.
The product hasn’t pivoted, hasn’t changed industries.
It still does what it was created for, right from day 01.
I want you to contemplate on this. I want you to absorb this feeling that you’re experiencing right now.
Stop trying to judge yourself/ your products/ services harshly.
When Google was launched, everyone said they would fail, because competitors (ask, yahoo, etc.) offered directories, and multiple features besides search.
Google entered the market, provided one feature, but they were so good at that feature, that most (if not all) of their competitors from that time period today are history.
Hope this note has managed to give you the perspective you needed to start focusing on doing just 1 thing and being the best at it, rather than trying to manage multiple things and be mediocre/ not good/ just good enough at them all.
