In The World of Content Creation, Being Creative Is a Bonus Skill
Being creative is a “good to have skill”, but you need more important skill sets under your belt to succeed as a content creator
Let me shock you with a fact that will take you some time to digest.
A lot of “creativity” with regards to content creation can be created (read: fabricated) after the creator is done with their job.
Read it again, if you couldn’t process it the first time around.
Let me explain this to you with a simple example.
We live in a very complex world wherein even a miserable singer can be made a top chart artist by adding a lot of melody, instrumental pieces in the background and that’s not it.
If you’re living under a rock, what I’m going to tell you next is going to break your heart, especially if you’re someone who loves music.
There are software applications like Auto-Tune that can completely change the way a song sounds to your ears vs. what was originally recorded in the recording studio.
Extrapolating the same idea to the world of content creation, this post will show you how “being creative” is an absolutely optional skill set in the life of a content creator.
Various aspects of content creation
Imagine a movie. Can one person create an entire 90-120 mins long entertainer?
Even if that’s possible, it’s going to be a far-fetched exception, right?
In (almost) all cases, it takes an army of professionals to create an entertaining movie.
I’d not be overstretching when I say, for every one person you see on the screen, there are at least 30-50 people who work behind the camera to make a movie.
In the case of animated/ big budget movies that require a lot of post-production muscle, that number could also be as high as 100 people for every person you see on the screen.
Content creation works in a similar manner.
While it’s possible for one person to create all the content they create, there are so many departments, skill sets that have to come together to create a quality content piece.
Primary role of a content creator
In a team of editors, script writers, camera person, lighting and sound professionals, stylists the actual job of a content creator would be limited to:
- Being a subject matter expert of the topic
- Having a pleasing personality
- Being authentic in the content that they deliver
With these fundamentals being in place, the entire backend team can end up creating content that generates millions of views with every content piece.
The job of the creator is to be genuine and speak in front of the camera/ the mic and the team takes care of the rest.
When a creator finds/ creates the right team, the world of the subscribers goes on a pause every time a new content piece is released by their favourite content creator.
Can anybody who’s not creative become a “successful” content creator?
In today’s world, 100%
However, the only point of contention is, does the creator in question have the financial bandwidth and the skills needed to manage the team.
In situations like these, the content creator acts like a conductor who’s responsible for all the people to work like an orchestra at the opera.
The bottom line
The true job of the content creator is to have a vision, execute that vision in front of the camera/ mic and create a strong (and genuine) bond with the audience members.
This world has witnessed millions of creators who aren’t the most skilful, and yet their growth and their personal brand is absolute evidence that with the right team, even a person with limited to no scripting/ editing/ sound engineering knowledge can become the best, the most loved and the most successful creator in their domain.
