The Simple Reality You Need To Know How To Manage Every Goal
Learn how to strike a balance between short term goals and long-term goals
Can a surgeon and a plumber work with the same level of intensity at their jobs?
A plumber could be in control of water supply to a big residential/ commercial complex, and hence the project on hand has an impact on multiple lives.
On the other hand, let’s imagine a surgeon to be operating on a young child whose case is extremely rare and sensitive.
The idea behind sharing this example is to help you realize that working with the same level of intensity, you don’t have to apply the same force or the same amount of power for every task and you surely don’t need to invest the same amount of time, efforts, energy, and/or resources for the same task. Right?
The task, the urgency, the complexity and the expected outcome determine the intensity of input, right?
Well, yes, and no.
I want to introduce one factor which will allow you to evaluate every task, every project, every mission from a slightly different lens.
Once you start evaluating your projects/ tasks on this scale, half of your planning and strategizing will be taken care of.
Imagine just 1 question that takes care of almost 60% or more of your planning effort.
The question that I want you to ask is:
“Will the impact of this be experienced in the short term or the long term?”
This question is the compass that you need.
Short term projects demand intensity and long-term projects determine consistency.
Let me explain with an example.
Participating in a coding hackathon?
The results are short term. You will have to go with full enthusiasm, and you will have to code like this is the last code you will execute.
However, you want to create a project that you’d like to take to investors and this code can end up becoming a source code for the platform you’re building.
You will have to plan the entire data structure, the security packs, the features on paper, recheck every connection and code for a few weeks/ months or maybe even years to actually be in a place to announce the product in beta stage.
For a project this size, you can’t be expected to code for 10-12 hours every day for years at a stretch.
Not only will you burn out, but chances of this project being full of bugs is going to be really high.
We are living in a world, where every other productivity content creator is giving you ideas on how to work for 12-14 hours day after day.
Imagine every surgeon operating on 10-12 sensitive cases day after day?
Imagine if a sculptor is expected to deliver a 12 feet statue in a few weeks?
Imagine if you were expected to build a meaningful relationship with a stranger in just a couple of days and make them your co-founder?
Good things can happen quickly, but great things definitely take time to build, develop, grow and leave a lifelong impact over time.
Stop using intensity as a “weapon of choice” for all projects.
You will be surprised at the quality and impact of consistency once it starts showing results in your life.
Consistency demands time, and when you find projects that bring you joy to stay consistent on, you will unlock results that are far more profitable and rewarding beyond your imagination.
Challenge is to get into the mindset and find a project that connects with you on such a deep level.
