It's High Time You Refine Your Definition of The Word Confidence
Are you sure you know what's the most accurate understanding of the word, "confidence"
Let’s start this note with a simple pro-tip. Whenever you feel you’re not 100% sure about what a word/ term means, please don’t try to guess the answer.
Take a few minutes and read the dictionary definition, and then apply your learning in your thought process to come up with an answer/ that’s closest to the dictionary definition.
The operative words being - 100% sure
You’re thinking why am I wasting your time by giving you such basic information and calling it a pro-tip?
Because in life, some situations play out quite differently than we would assume/ think/ want.
For example, could you tell me, how does confidence get displayed in the life of a confident person?
Think about this for a minute.
How does confidence get displayed/ reflected in the life of someone, who claims/ comes across to be a fairly confident personality?
Let me give you some options.
Does a confident person:
a. Not feel scared?
b. Is capable of achieving any/ all goals?
c. Can perform any task however difficult?
How do YOU decode confidence?
I hope you’re doubting your understanding of the word confidence. Don’t worry, by the end of this note, you will have clarity on 2 ideas, so bear with me for the next few minutes.
One of the dictionary definitions of the word confidence reads, “Belief in the effectiveness of one's own abilities or in one's favourable acceptance by others; self-confidence.”
Now let’s look at a common understanding of the word confidence.
More often than not, people associate the word confident with “not being scared of the complexity of the task at hand.”
However, do you feel that this holds true with the dictionary definition that you’ve just read?
In my view, confidence is not about “not being scared of the complexity of the task at hand”.
That sounds like being fearless.
My understanding of confidence (based on the definition) is, having the understanding of the complexities at hand on the basis of knowledge, past experiences and using this emotion to give your 100% to the task at hand, even if you’re scared/ worried about the consequences.
Especially if/ when you’re unsure and scared about the consequences.
If need be, re-read this note again.
Not being scared of the complexities of the situation would make someone arrogant, over-confident and I hope you’d agree that overconfidence more often than not leads to more disasters than results.
Remember I told you this note focuses on delivering 2 results/ benefits?
I hope you now,
1. Agree to the fact that reading the dictionary definition brings a lot of clarity and leads to better decision making, and
2. You now have a more nuanced understanding of the word confidence.
I also hope you’d agree that I did live up to my promise, and that this note added value to the time you’ve invested in reading till this point.
