Here's Why Getting Offended Is The Most Futile and a Colossal Waste of an Exercise on Social Media
I hardly judge people, but if you’re a keyboard warrior, I’m definitely judging you!
What would happen if you handover a machineg*n to a monkey?
Would you expect the peace to prevail, or would you expect anarchy within minutes?
Keep this analogy at the back of your mind as you read the following note
Protip: Make sure you read this post in one sitting. Let’s Go!
Social media what?
When social media started, it was the digital version of the “wild wild west”
It wasn’t even called social media.
It was referred to as “that thing on the internet” by the novice and “social networking” by those in the know.
Long story short with addition of (addictive) features like timeline, notifications, options to add pictures and videos, hashtags, individual platforms for different content types, over time this wild wild west has become commonplace and it’s now the social media as we know it!
Social media and liberation
I’m not sure if you’re someone who can remember what life looked like pre social media… Can you?
For most people the first taste of freedom in the true sense of the word was on social media.
You could connect with people across cultures, without boundaries, learn new skills, share your work, get feedback, make friends, find love, et al.
Little did we know this social media was soon going to mutate into a beast of a completely different kind.
Social media and “free speech”
Want to witness the most evident misuse of one of the most famous quotes from pop-culture, “with great power comes great responsibility”?
Allow me to introduce you to the concept of free speech on social media.
While most people were trying to build connections, learn from each other, and grow as individuals, some people understood the magnitude of chaos that could be generated on social media.
This fragment of users started sharing/ saying things on public forums; repercussions of which felt minimal (read: what would one post in the ocean of social media create anyway?) in no time became a ticking time bomb.
This is the stage when the monkey was introduced to the proverbial weapon on mass destruct*on.
Social media = vitriol
Let’s look at the sorry state of social media today.
jealousy
Fake Ne*s
Comparison
Keyboard warri0rs
Broken relationships
Mental health challenges
Endless hours of gossip, arguments, fights, profanity in comments/ subreddits.
What was once the probable solution to most challenges of humankind is slowly becoming/ has become the root of most (if not all) of the problems of today
Collateral Damage
It’s high time we call a spade a spade.
Social media is here to stay.
However, if you’re someone who gets agitated by something that you see/ hear/ read on one of the subreddits/ comments section on social media and (unknowingly) end up spending hours staying and defending your point of views, this message is for you.
I know you’re passionate about what you think.
I know your voice is powerful and internet is far more powerful, but you need to understand the difference between those who are trying to create their powerful image on a platform that’s not theirs (read: you on social media) vs. those who are already in power who own and influence the decisions on these platforms (the Melon Rusk and the Fonald Drumps of the world)
If you’re one among the army of those who use their free speech argument as a weapon to keep spreading a flawed agenda that has been brainwashed into your subconscious mind, you’re not a part of the problem…
In the ecosystem where you are at, you are the problem.
I hope you agree, and I request you’d not like to be looked at (from people in your life) as the monkey mentioned at the start of the post.
The ones who will survive
I know it’s extreme to say that the ones who are trying to spread their voice on the internet will perish (not survive) beyond a point, but I’m just stating the absolute facts on the basis of past history.
Do you remember who started or what happened of the #MeToo movement?
Of course there were many who paid the price of their deeds, but what about most perpetrators?
Also, last I checked the situation on ground hasn’t improved too much.
The bottom-line
First things first, I apologise if this note was too raw/ unfiltered for your taste.
However, if you’re here, please do leave a comment below after you’re done reading these last few lines.
The only way to make a difference is to be the difference you wish to see in this world.
I’m nobody to tell you what you should be doing, and what you shouldn’t be doing.
Which is precisely why, even earlier I ended my point of view with a request for you.
I wish the best of health (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual), wealth and relationship for you and your loved ones.
May you focus on your life for real and learn to let go of the trigger warnings that most algorithm controlled social mafia platforms have become.

Life before social media...aawww, that's peace. Loved the way you have highlighted this concern. Embracing the technology was part o social evolution but some people have ruined the essence of evolution. There is a proverb that says,"if you have no good to say then dont say anyrhing at all. Your words should hold a purpose and shouldn't leave a scar or dent to others. As you said, i wish 'voice' gets a voice
